I'm sitting here in zone 7b wondering when and how I should prune, mulch, and fertilize the hybrid roses I planted last spring for the very first time. I have both climbers and shrubs.

Anybody got any advice?

Hey barkingspider! I would say don't prune before the summer, as they are in their first year - I have always my new ones alone for a full year to settle in, then pruned after the last frost of winter, and they grow, grow, grow. But I mainly grow Old English roses, I dont know what you are growing, it might be different.

Most of my advice over the years has come from David Austin and The American Rose Society, for better or worse, I dont know - but though last years horrid drought here in Dallas, my roses are the only thing still thriving.

Thank you for your reply, Dixie. I'll follow your advice and leave them alone for a spell.

They are all hybrid teas. I think I might maybe experiment with an old garden variety or two this spring.

I would love to see pictures in this thread, in the spring when they bloom! I just love roses, especially teas - and am too chicken to grow them! ;)

If you are wanting some ideas in selecting a rose for your garden here's something I just wrote this past week: plantsbulbs.suite101.com/article.cfm/selecting_an_old_garden_rose [plantsbulbs.suite101.com/article.cfm/selecting_an_old_garden_rose] about selecting an Old Garden Rose!

I'd love to see pictures of everyone's roses this summer also!

Bravo. Nice blog, Ange.

I'm looking for real white and fragrant, if possible... & I'd better start looking soon.

Have you thought about an Alba rose?

Here's this one about albas: plantsbulbs.suite101.com/article.cfm/alba_roses_rosa_alba [plantsbulbs.suite101.com/article.cfm/alba_roses_rosa_alba] - they are white and fragrant...old garden roses.
In THIS article about Aryshire roses there is a link to some information about "rose fountains" plantsbulbs.suite101.com/article.cfm/ayrshire_roses_rosa_arvensis [plantsbulbs.suite101.com/article.cfm/ayrshire_roses_rosa_arvensis] ....totally awesome...becuase Albas can grow in a cascading form they would probably work to create a fountain effect the same way.

How cool would that be as the center of a semi-formal medieval style herb garden instead of an actually WATER fountain? I'm thinking about doing something like that in my front side yard.

I also just picked up three shrub roses - the Knock-Out series - the double reds and the 'Blush' (medium pinks).

But I'm seriously considering an old garden climber. :-) LOVE that fragrance!

`Suppoosed to freeze for at least the next 3 days here in Chattanooga...

Have yall ever covered roses for a freeze? I am thinking cheap drop cloth to protect them: it'll only be below freezing for prolly a maximum of an hour or two each day.

7) Alba is the very one I had my eye on; Haven't found any greenhouse specimens to sample yet in the garden centers of this miracle-gro town that I live in... `may have to trip down to Hotlanta to see what they have down there.

I covered mine that I had just planted - only becuase I had JUST put them out about three days prior and the temps changed so quickly. I just threw a bunch of straw around them and then put a pot upsidedown over the top to keep the growing tips from "burning". :-) Same with my grapes. And my blackberries - both of which were new transplants. Oh yeah - and my tomatoes....covered all of them up as well. *wry grin*

I don't think anyone near me carries them either - I get about 20 gardening catelogs in the mail. **laughing**

I decided to just let them experience a late freeze. I lost quite a few blossoms, but I feel pretty confident pruning them this weekend, -which really needed doing in January anyway. What a messed up weather season.

OB Good News: It's supposed to be warm & rain like hell this week.
